How to Tap Into Your “Why” and Fuel Long Term Change

If you have ever set a goal, stuck to it for a week or two, then slowly drifted back into old patterns, you are not alone. In fact, it is something I have experienced many times in my own journey.

You start with motivation. You are fired up. You tell yourself, “This is it.” But then life happens, you get tired, overwhelmed, discouraged. The motivation fades. So what actually keeps you going when motivation does not?

It is your “why.”

But not just the surface level “why.” It is the deep, emotional, unshakable reason that lives beneath the noise. It is what you turn to when everything in you wants to quit, and it is powerful enough to carry you through.

And that is why I want to share with you the method that changed the game for me (and thousands of women in our community): The 7 Levels Deep exercise.

What Is “7 Levels Deep”?

It is a simple, powerful journaling process I learnt some 10 years ago, that helps you peel back the layers of your motivation, and discover the real reason you want to change.

You start by answering this question:

“Why do I want to [insert your goal]?” (For example: “Why do I want to lose weight?”) Whatever your first answer is, ask yourself: “Why is that important to me?” And keep going, seven times. Each answer peels back a layer.

At first, you might say: “I want to lose weight to come back to the old me.” Then, “So I can feel confident in my clothes.” Then, “Because I do not want to hide in photos anymore.” Then maybe, “Because I want my daughter to see a mum who is proud of herself.”

By the time you hit the seventh level, you are not talking about a number on the scale. You are talking about identity. Purpose. Self worth. And that is the fuel that does not burn out.

Why This Works

We are emotional beings. Even if your goals are practical, like losing weight or building strength, your ability to stick with them comes from a deep emotional connection. The clearer and more connected you are to your “why,” the easier it is to:

  • Say no to what drains you

  • Say yes to what strengthens you

  • Keep going on the days you feel flat

  • Stop abandoning yourself when things get hard

It is not about being “disciplined enough”, it is about being emotionally anchored.

How to Try This Today

Take 10 minutes. Open a notebook or your phone notes. Ask yourself: “Why do I want to [insert your current goal]?”

Then ask: “Why is that important to me?” Again. And again. Until you reach your seventh answer.

You will feel it when you land on the real one, it usually hits somewhere in your chest. Write that answer on a sticky note. Keep it on your fridge. Your mirror. Your phone background. Let it guide your choices, your energy, and your comeback every time you lose momentum.

One Last Thought

At Transform, we believe fitness is not just about movement, it is about remembering who you are. Your workouts are one way you return to yourself. Your food is how you nourish your energy. But your why? That is your compass.

Go 7 levels deep. Anchor into what matters. And then, move forward from that place. You have got this.

With love,
