Dark Chocolate Cherry Cups: The Sweet, Tart Freezer Treat You Need to Try

Dark Chocolate Cherry Cups: The Sweet, Tart Freezer Treat You Need to Try

Juicy cherries, a crisp chocolate shell and a treat waiting for you in the freezer? Yes, we'll take a dozen.

These Dark Chocolate Cherry Cups are proof that the best treats don't need to be complicated. Thawed cherries get mashed with chia seeds, maple syrup and vanilla, frozen into little bites, and then dipped in melted dark chocolate.

The result? Sweet, tart and chocolatey, all in one bite.

Why you'll love these Dark Chocolate Cherry Cups

We love a recipe that needs only a handful of ingredients, and this one uses just five.

There's no baking and no fancy equipment. A bowl, a fork and some silicone moulds are all you need. The freezer does most of the work, so you can make a batch, pop it away and have a little chocolate treat ready whenever the craving hits.

And because they're kept in the freezer, they're perfect for keeping on hand for those afternoons when you want something sweet.

Dark Chocolate Cherry Cups Recipe

Total time: 2 hours 15 minutes (mostly freezing time)

Makes: 10–12 cups

Meal: Treat

Ingredients

  • 200 g frozen pitted cherries, thawed

  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

  • 1 tsp maple syrup

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

  • 220 g dark chocolate

Method

  1. Place the thawed cherries in a bowl and drain off any excess liquid.

  2. Mash the cherries with a fork until mostly broken down, leaving a few small pieces for texture.

  3. Stir through the chia seeds, maple syrup and vanilla. Set aside for 10–15 minutes to allow the chia seeds to absorb the excess liquid and thicken the mixture.

  4. Spoon the cherry mixture into 10 small silicone moulds or mini muffin holes and freeze for 1–2 hours, or until completely firm.

  5. Melt the dark chocolate and dip each frozen cherry bite into the chocolate, allowing any excess to drip off. Place on a lined tray and return to the freezer until the chocolate has set. Alternatively, using a slightly bigger muffin mould, fill the base with dark chocolate, place your frozen cherry cup in the middle and cover with the remaining chocolate.

  6. Store in the freezer and allow to soften slightly at room temperature before serving.

The little ingredient doing the big job

Let's talk about the chia seeds.

Thawed cherries are juicy, which is exactly what makes them so delicious, but it also means the mixture can be a bit runny. That's where the chia seeds come in.

Given 10–15 minutes to sit, they soak up the extra liquid and thicken the mashed cherries into a mixture that holds its shape in the moulds.

Add a touch of maple syrup and vanilla, and you've got a sweet, tart cherry centre that pairs perfectly with rich dark chocolate.

Two ways to make them

Dipped: Pop the frozen cherry bites out of their moulds and dip each one in melted dark chocolate, letting the excess drip off before they go back into the freezer on a lined tray.

Cup style: Use a slightly bigger muffin mould. Add a layer of melted chocolate to the base, place a frozen cherry bite in the middle and cover it with the rest of the chocolate for a filled chocolate cup.

Either way, you get that satisfying snap of chocolate before the cherry centre.

Your questions, answered

Do I need to thaw the cherries first?

Yes. The recipe uses frozen pitted cherries that have been thawed, then drained of any excess liquid before mashing.

Why do I need to let the mixture sit?

Setting it aside for 10–15 minutes gives the chia seeds time to absorb the extra liquid and thicken the mixture, so it holds together in the moulds.

How long do they need in the freezer?

Freeze the cherry mixture for 1–2 hours, or until completely firm, before coating it in chocolate. Then return the cups to the freezer until the chocolate has set.

Can I eat them straight from the freezer?

They're best after softening slightly at room temperature before serving.

Are they dairy-free and gluten-free?

That depends on your dark chocolate. Check the label of the chocolate you use if you're avoiding dairy, gluten or other allergens.

What if I don't have silicone moulds?

Mini muffin holes work too, as the recipe suggests.

A little treat, ready when you are

Something sweet tucked away in the freezer. Something chocolatey with a juicy, fruity centre. Something that takes five ingredients and no oven.

Because eating well isn't about saying no to the treats you love.

Sometimes it's simply finding new ways to enjoy them.

And if that happens to be a little dark chocolate cherry cup, we're very much here for it.
