5 Healthy Tricks to Help You Survive Easter

It’s happened to the best of us — eight chocolate mini eggs, a slightly embarrassing number of Easter bunnies along with fifty Hot Cross Buns drenched in butter. Enter: Easter and about 5 kilos to go with it. While it takes only about 3 seconds to devour a creme egg, it takes about 2 hours of intense training to work it off #truestory. Rest assured, we’ve put together 5 healthy tricks to help you survive Easter (and the food coma) and keep the calories at bay.
Before your annoying aunty starts asking her million and one questions, before grandma forces you to eat her apple tart, make sure you feast on breakfast first. Start the day with a protein-rich brekkie so you feel fuller for longer and most importantly, you’re less likely to reach for the chocolate later in the day. Think protein-packed omelettes or even a protein shake with berries. If you start your day chowing down easter eggs your blood sugar levels will run havoc for the rest of the day. Stick to what you know, and don’t make excuses for yourself just because it’s Easter. See some FitazFK approved breakfasts below:

Chocolate is the joy of Easter, so we wouldn’t want to take that away from you. But, just remember to portion control. We’ll allow you to eat almost everything... in moderation. Instead of those giant eggs at hourly intervals (which btw, is a very bad idea), get individual mini eggs. Having to unwrap each mini egg one at a time is more time consuming and after a few (here’s hoping) you’ll be more aware of how many you’re eating. Yes, we may sound a little erm, strange - but it totally works!
P.S. If you’re in charge of buying the chocolate this year opt for a healthier version. Look for chocolate that has at least 70 percent dark cocoa which has the added bonus of antioxidants or find chocolate that uses organic ingredients.
It’s easy to let yourself go when it’s a “holiday”. We’re here to make sure you don’t lose your eye on the prize and stay as active as possible over the Easter long weekend. No, we don’t suggest a 5K run on Easter Sunday when it’s family time, but there are another three days where your excuses run short. If you’re planning to go BIG on your food choices, then you’ll need to choose from intense interval training which will burn more calories in a shorter amount of time - winning! Remember, we’re all about balance. Here’s what you need to do to burn off that chocolate!
To burn off a 50g Chocolate Easter Bunny:
- Power walking (with dog) for 85 minutes
- Run with 70% heart rate for 56 minutes
Medium sized 25g Easter Egg:
- Power walking for 30 minutes
- Jogging/boxing.skipping 15 minutes
Large 100g Easter Egg:
- Power walking for 2 hours
- Running/boxing/skipping for 1 hour
An easy way to deal with those cringe-worthy questions about your love life around the table is to drink (a lot) of alcohol (you already know we’re shaking our heads). The excess food, partying and alcohol can leave you extremely dehydrated. Drinking a glass of water (or sparkling water) in between each alcoholic drink. Remember anything more than one standard drink an hour puts the liver under great strain! Need more convincing? Research has shown that by increasing your water intake by 1.5 litres a day, you can burn an extra 17,400 calories per year. Water shots, anyone?

Rid of the Evidence
We’re not into wasting any food - but #temptation. Once Easter Sunday has come and gone, get the showbags, hot cross buns, and chocolate out of the house. ‘Cause the longer they’re lurking in your cupboards, the more tempted you’ll be to eat them (all). The solution? Share the love - give some to friends, nephews and nieces, take them to the office on Tuesday or even a helpful neighbour. Whatever you do, get rid of them!
